You should shut off the review screen, use a external flash, shut off the light meter after 5 sec. This should save a lot of power. My Nikon D-80 has a grip attachment for 2 batteries. They last for 2500 pictures each. Don't "chimp" or review/edit the photo's until you get home.

the battery in my D-200 last 1 day in the winter and about 3 in the summer, give or take in the spring and fall. I aways bring in 3 batteries and have never ran out of power. If you think your going to run out of power stop using auto-focus, VR, and previewing images to help get you through your trip.

Does anyone else bring a digital Nikon in? I'm curious how long the rechargeable battery lasts on your trips and how many extra you do you bring?

I forgot to say that my battery grip can also accept a pack that holds 6 AA batteries. It is a life saver in case you have left your camera on in the bag and ran your battery down.
