another photo of a root ball but this has a story.
we were at Cold Water Spring and walking in the area south of the pond.
when the geology department was located here there was a small test site for making iron ore pellets.the left over crushed rock was dumped
into the stream bed formed by the spring,it's a large swampy spot.
this tree must of grown where the dump was and mixed in the roots are
hunks of the crushed ore.years ago you could find hand fulls of pellets but they seem to have been all found and collected.

because my birthday is in March i'm going to run this photo.
there is a story here.my Wife won a $100 ticket to a NPS movie and buffet at the Science Museum in St Paul.lots of deep pocket donors with the mayors as speakers.the main event was the movie about the NPS and it's 100th year.so Barb is watching a slide show before the flick about the Mississippi River NP and along with kids in canoes and folks by the river i popped up on the screen! i was taking shots at Cold Water Spring for the NPS and this photo which i took just for myself was mixed in with one of the batches i sent.

no more photos or much else for awhile.my very old laptop which is a
hand-me down from my daughters early university days is a worn out mess.it has that old OS that they don't do up grades for anymore and i can't watch youtubes or other movies and videos.
friends tell me photos i sent on emails come thru half grayed out.
i'll be getting a newer Dell with windows 10 like my wife has and likes.so this is it until i'm up and running again.

i thought i could do a new photo every day for March but getting out
is hard to do right now and if i try and just take BW shots around
the house you will end up with a close up of my old peanut butter tubes.
so i'll give you some of the better photos from past trips.

i was on Brule Lake where i did not have to portage this klunker.

That is a cool looking stove! Looks robust, are they finicky? Somewhere I've got an old Wisperlight International that I ran kerosene in a few times but it was so long ago I have zero recollection on how it performed.

we got out today so here is a fresh photo.
Crosby Park by the river in St Paul has some nice woods to wander around in this time of year.by summer they will be full of stinging nettle!
the stove in the other photo is a Hipolito made in Portugal.they are a very well made clone of the Primus stoves from Sweden.kerosene is a nasty fuel.it is hard to preheat but once going burns hot and without soot.i collect these old stoves and just take them on easy trips.

Well, the story is. This was a old miners place at first. Its right across the road from Mariposa creek. Later, long after the miner was gone a guy moved in and started to raise cattle. The local ranchers noticed his herd grew amazingly fast. So a bunch of them went and confronted him about rustling. He denied it, so the ranchers shot a steer and skinned it. by looking at the back side of the skin they saw the brand had been altered. That was in the late 1800's. In 1977 I was stationed in that area with the Cal. Dept. of Forestry. The only resident in a 15 mile area around the station was a old time rancher. He told me the story. The end result according to him, they hung the rustler and burned the shack he lived in. Then, not to waist the steer, they took it along and had a barbeque. Old Ray was quite a story teller!"

This is a bit extreme, not my usual style and it's not perfect but was fun to make all the same. It's three photos taken with my phone, stitched together on my ipad mini with an app called Auto Stitch Pic and then processed with another app called Snapseed. Three weeks stuck in a hotel room gets you looking for ways to entertain yourself. :)
