Great report. Thanks for sharing . We stayed at your "canoe catching" site on Nina Moose on 6/30.

Enjoyed your report, Tom! It's basically the first trip I did. It seems like your daughter is becoming quite a good tripping partner. Was she able to totally do the canoe by herself - lifting and lowering as well as carrying?

Thanks! I actually tried to help her lift the canoe once, and I only made it worse, so yes, she's pretty tentative lifting it but can do it. She'll get better with practice. Putting it down isn't really an issue.

Many thanks to wables, who suggested the route. On the map below, the blue is where we went and the red is where we tentatively planned to go before the trip.

Sounds like a great trip. I did that route last summer but skipped the bottom of the Oyster River. I very much liked the drawing of the night of the mosquito infestation; which one of you drew that?

Tom i was following a thread discussing the garmin mini and portable power. now i can't find it but recall that you made a recommendation for a lightweight power bank. What did you get and how do you like it? Thanks. S

Were you thinking of this thread perhaps? I got the Anker Core Power 10000 that Wally13 recommended. I'll have a more informed opinion in two weeks when we get back from our Quetico trip; so far it looks promising.

I really enjoyed your trip report. Sounds like a perfect time with your daughter and a wonderful trip. Her drawings are charming!

Crane Lake has a nice Independence Day Parade on the 4th of July and some quite spectacular fireworks over the lake. We happened to be there one year on the 4th (2005) and enjoyed the small-town community celebration a great deal.

Your loop was basically my first solo trip. Nice loop. Nothing like taking your kids on a father-son/daughter trip. Great cartoons by your daughter, don't lose those.

Excellent report. What a gift of time together with you and your daughter. We started taking our kids as toddlers and when they became 12-ish, they were able to fairly easily carry a canoe or pack. Youth are strong! Now, 12, 15 and 18...they can pretty much tackle everything we can tackle. Well done!

Love the journal drawings!

Just have to say... Your report was excellent, but if you had done nothing but post your daughter's drawings it might well have been one of the finest trip report ever told. I love the drawings.

Many happy returns with you and your daughter.

Ha thanks, my daughter enjoys drawing. Some of her other reimaginings of details of the trip:

We took almost the same route 2 years ago and didn't see anyone on Gebe for 2 nights either. It's a good lake for more solitude. Also agree the northwind has been a good canoe for river turns and stability. Glad you had a good trip with your daughter. It's a tough age for a lot of people and to be able to get through an 8 day trip together is great.
