July 30, 2017, my party of 9 (5 kids / 4 adults) were coming back from Cherokee to Sawbill. We had been through this portage a week prior to, and knew it was a muddy mess. In fact, my 12 year old daughter called it "The Mud Portage of Doom!". On that especially large mud-hole, my friend sank up to his waist as he was carrying my canoe. He lost his shoe when attempting to extract himself - the thick mud sucked it right off as you well know. I looked and hunted for that shoe for many minutes, but I was unable to find it. In the interest of time, we had to move on. My friend made it back to Sawbill on his spare set of shoes. We thought for sure that shoe would be lost for the next millennium. We're all shocked to see it again! -Rey from West Lafayette, IN |

Rey from WL: "I know this shoe! What are the chances of finding that shoe again? On a eastern river trip we were wet footing and I would place my "slip on" wet shoes into a sunny place on the canoe while we traveled to dry out a bit. When we went to stop for lunch I found that one of these shoes had turned up missing. I got kidded during lunch and afterwards when we stopped for the night a buddy found a different shoe in perfect condition that was sized to fit my size 13 feet while fishing from shore. I used that shoe for the rest of the trip.......... |
