Nice report, thanks.
Brings back good memories, my then 9 year old son and I took that same route on our first-ever trip in 2015. I also think we ended up in the same, very shallow "mini-rapids" that you mention, that emptied into a small 3 or 4 acre pool. After figuring we were lost, we were able to paddle back up the rapids, (I did say they were small) and re-orient ourselves.
I hope to do that route again, in a few more years, after seeing more of what the rest of the BWCA has to offer.

That's great to hear - safe to say that site is the best I've stayed at yet. We all had McKenzie maps. This year we're going to diversify and carry a few different versions just in case!

Your trip report brought back memories of August 1976 when I did the same route. I remember using a USFS typed route guide listing all portage locations which we found to be very accurate.

Thanks, johndku! The water was far too low while we were there to paddle those rapids. Despite the initial confusion, it was a fantastic route. Hope to take it again in the future as well - this year we're sticking to lakes.

What a neat trip! I’m impressed how eager to swim you all seam to be, we always find it quite cold. On a warm day it does feel nice.

I grew up swimming in the Irish Sea (year round) so I'm a fan of cold water dips! Sometimes I'm the only swimmer for this reason, but we really lucked out with the sunny 70s weather we were granted on this particular trip.
