I read Paradise Below Zero by Calvin Rutstrum every January. His tips on matching clothing with activity level and fitness may be helpful to you.

Thanks for sharing!

Great report
I went through wind one time in the winter on my way to basswood. I still remember the steep portage from moose lake because I forgot my pulk poles at home.

SJ,
Thanks for the advice! I’ll have to see if my library has that one.

At the end of your report when you apologized for not having photos I thought what, there were no photos?

Your storytelling painted a perfect picture. No photos required, although it will be fun to see your video once posted.

I also prefer cold camping vs. hot tent. Just seems easier if you have the proper sleeping bag etc.

And the silence is deafening. Yes, but isn't it just grand! I went and sat on my deck yesterday and listened to the quiet woods. Its the best.

Thank you for sharing your experience. Nothing like bringing too much stuff. I think most people do that and for winter trips the tendency is to over do it as well. I still bring a change of clothes in case I get wet or soaked with sweat.

It was fun to read your report. Looking forward to any pictures or videos of your trip.

Sounds like a great trip. I wondered how one of those hub houses would work for a quick and easy winter camping shelter. The thermal versions would seem to be a great option if size and weight can be managed.

Well done! Glad it was a successful first winter trip. I look forward to the video when it is up. I know what it is like to be expecting a hard schlag, then suddenly find an unexpected trail - what relief!

When would it traditionally be best to go ski in and camp during the winter from a conditions standpoint? Mid March?

Great video as always Tony and thanks for sharing. A solo winter trip would be hard to stave off the boredom and I think you showed that, long nights and shorter adventures from camp. Keep adventuring and enjoy the Winter!
