BonzSF: "Thanks. I was primarily there for relaxation and getting some good pictures. Catching fish would have been a bonus. Next trip I WANT to catch fish too. So what's the secret to fishing in late august? A quick answer would do as I am mostly used to rivers and creeks with the various trout species here in the West. Also what are the opportunities for smaller species trout waters in the BW? Thanks for posting your first trip report. I have flipped a canoe before. Thankfully, it was a day trip and the only thing I didn't recover was a water bottle. On the fishing. I have caught small mouth bass using a slip bobber and leeches in August. August fishing has a reputation for driving the lake trout and walleye to deep waters. Be on the look out for moving water where one lake empties into another. This can be a productive spot to fish. As far as trout goes the standard advice is to check the MDNR lake finder and see what lakes have trout in them. I have read that in some lakes, brook and even rainbow trout are stocked. I haven't caught either in the bwca. If you are using an outfitter they could probably provide some advice. |

#9) Don't throw boulders at the fire grate, or anywhere in camp. I'm glad to hear no one was injured during your trip and the water was theoretically warmer being it was August. Dumping in the shoulder season is bad for everyone involved. J |

It seemed that piling rocks around fire grates was a common thing. I will collect wood away from camp since reading this site. I'm learning Outfitter packed a wrong tent bag. Hardly any fuel spilled. probably less than is spilled refilling a camp stove. Some one was there and immediately set the can on it's side. We transferred most of the fuel into empty boda bags. Then patched the can with white waterproof medical adhesive tape for the very little left in the can. Then transported it carefully to the next site where it was used up. I know a very little petroleum product can pollute a vast amount of water. Not my finest time though. |
