While Hog Creek was annoying - in and out of Perent could be an option for someone wanting to base camp there. Honestly - best bet - if possible, would be Isabella Lake EP (35?) to either base camp on Isabella, or hit the one great campsite on Boca, in my opinion.

Since I don't have any plans to go there soon, I will second that latter recommendation. :-)

Hopefully you weren't discouraged by the slog. Most years aren't this bad. Water levels make a big difference. Entry points also. At least you made it through and have a tough trip to compare future trips to. It's always nice to think "at least it's not as bad as Hog creek" when a portage is kicking your behind.

Thanks - yes, can be stubborn. Not that I was ready for a "Deus Ex Machina" :)

Sounds like a rough go with the low water. Glad you were able to make it through. You sound like a solidly stubborn tripper...that's a good thing in my book.

Wow. This was even worse than I first imagined when you started discussing your plan to do the traverse to Isabella. Anybody thinking of this route this year would be well advised to choose something else!

Congratulations on being able to push through! That is one tough trip for your first BWCA paddle. Despite the hardships, my biggest regret for you is that after the trip you didn’t get to sit somewhere having a beer, and have those 4 young guys come in and ask you how far you got before you turned around!
