Thanks for the memories, canvas tent and blue genes classic. All the bugs, wet, tried and cold very much like my first trips. All the hardships fade with time but the smells of fire and camping with friends and family last a life time.

Thanks very much for sharing your memories. My mother and Gail Skrein were in the same maternity ward with newborn daughters in 1957. That started a long friendship between our families that was renewed almost annually at the end of the Trail. (My handle here is a remembrance of the days when it was not paved.)

Thanks to all for your kind replies !!
Up till a few years ago at the end of each camping trip, I would have the" burning of the sox " ceremony where I would toss all my dirty smelly sox in the last nights camp fire. Partly as memory and partly because I didn't want to deal with the yucky things. A fitting end to cotton tube sox.

What great memories! I loved reading this. The canvas tent and Mapalene brought back memories. What incredibly useless PFDs you had. Glad you didn't swamp in the big winds and end up discovering how useless they were. I remember our first PFDs were filled with kapok...glad those days are gone. Thanks for sharing the memories.

It was fun reading a trip report from that far back and seeing how things have changed. I particularly like 1964 because it was the year that I was born.

That's an awesome report! Thanks so much for sharing. Brought back memories of my first trip about 20 years later (but still using canvas tents, lol).

Could this be a record for longest time between a trip an a trip report?

Great memory of the first trip.

Oh, Merlyn, I enjoyed this so much!! I wish you had some pictures!

My first trip was 1971, Spartan1's first trip was 1967. So many of the things you mentioned were part of our trips, too.

I do remember Mapleine (I had to google it for the spelling) for the syrup. We did that for a couple years, then switched to real maple syrup and never looked back on that one. Still were taking Tang on our last trip in 2013--I think more for the tradition than anything else. Never had a trip without it after the second one (on our first trip we got some sort of orange powder at Canadian Waters and it was not nearly as good as Tang.)

Your report may have been rambling, but so much of what you said brought a smile to my face, as it brought back so many memories. Not all of them good memories, but such crystal-clear memories of times long, long ago.

Thanks. I am still smiling. :-)
