dogwoodgirl: "nothing better than watching your kid fall in love with the woods..."

It was incredible, having him tell all the stories with his brother and sister and mom at dinner was awesome! Can not wait for next year!

ducks: "I absolutely love this trip report. Well done! There is nothing better than the one on one bonding time in the wilderness with your kid. I started taking each of my girls on a daddy/daughter trip when they were 5 and they are now 19 and 17. We alternate each year which one goes with me and which one does something special with mom.

Next week I take my 5 year old son Bruin on his first trip. . I’m so excited and so is he. Your trip report pumped me up even more. I wonder if his sisters will catch on when I start taking him every year. LOL.

Which lake did you end up camping on? We are entering at South Kawishiwi River so we don’t have a long paddle to a campsite and he wants to see Bruin Lake :). Lake One was my 2nd choice if I didn’t get the EP 32 permit so it’s on the short list for his trip next year. On my April solo I entered at Lake One, but stayed on Lake One because it was so windy and only a few days after ice out. It was fine though because I still had the lake all to myself and didn’t see anyone else because it was April. I would like to get back sometime to see what’s beyond Lake One. "

We ended up going to lake 3. I didn’t want to overwork him. He took lots of break from paddling but overall was a rockstar.

That first picture says it all. The others make for a great trip report. There truly is nothing like taking one of your kids for their first trip. I second Reid's comment: you are a great dad. Look forward to reading your next report.

Yes..... the kids definitely are not paddling all of the time which helps make it much more enjoyable for them. If we paddle harder for them now, they will hopefully return the favor when we are old and they are teenagers/adults.

Do you mind sharing which campsite you were at? Good shore fishing can be a life saver when tripping with kids, especially if you get wind bound.

Really enjoyed the report--thanks for sharing the story with us, and thanks for sharing Canoe Country with the next generation who will enjoy and protect the magic place.

this is probably one of the best stories i've read in a long time.

your son in so accepting and resilient, doesn't let too much ruffle his feathers.
the fact that he wants to go for 15 days!!! is amazing. i say take him on as many long trips as possible while he's this age and doesn't have lots of "outside world" trappings to tempt him to shorter trips.

the photo of him sitting on the rock in a contemplative pose is just beautiful.
