Good report Oldgent. Looks like I'll have to put the BILW on my bucket list of places to visit. I liked the photo of the leaves in the water.

Thanks for the report!"

Yes, and unlike the BWCA there's no permit required. Just self register at the parking lot and head on in.

I'm sure if usage increases there will eventually be a permit system. The 4 guys from Illinois that were going in as I was coming out had been there in August, and there were people there then, but still not that many.

Also, most lakes have only 1 camp site. Big Island Lake and Townline Lake have 2.

Thanks! It sounds a lot like Sylvania Wilderness, also in the UP.

I've been to Sylvania once. BILW gets a lot fewer visitors.

Since reading this trip report I have done some research and have decided a trip north is in order soon after ice out. Mapquest says it is 9.5 hours drive which will be worth the drive.

Thanks for the report!

Great report. This is a place that I can get to from the Chicago area for a long weekend. I'm about to take the plunge and make this canoeing my main activity. It's taken years to get here...Why? I don't know.
Anyway, thanks for filling me in on this little jewel.
