These are stunning photographs. I very much enjoyed this report, and have gone back to it several times. Your writing is better than you think. You practice good restraint, and don't over-write, as most of us do, and there's the photos, which are truly outstanding.

Great report! I loved your photos - you have captured the area very well. It brought back memories of my solo to Williamson Island 2 years ago.

Thanks for the report, our trips overlapped on a couple days in part of that same area so the pics brought back nice memories. I also loved the Bridge/Rifle part of the route and the lovely colors that week. Nice shots!

Jon Shaw has a couple good books on the subject. photo.net can be an imformative site.

Thanks for the report and beautiful pictures. I've wanted to go into the numbered lakes, but have also wanted to avoid the crowds. A late fall trip is enticing, but the wind concerns me.

Very nice trip report and outstanding photos. We did the 'numberered lakes' in early September - lots of people around. It sounds like you had the lakes to yourself - lucky! Thanks for sharing your experience!

great report and high quality photos.seeing work like yours makes me want to ramp up my skills on the computer and do less snap shooting and try for real photos...i was only in that area once killing time before i went into Quetico and that Fire-Bridge area is nice backwoods.

Red Royalex Wenonah Heron... Did see a solo stripper from a distance on Lake Three maybe that Saturday or Sunday?? Paddling slowly early morning with the fog? Was camped on the point on the left as you round into Lake Three from Lake Two. Saw no solos on the backwoods route and almost no people at all, perfect time of year to see this busy route. Paddled past "Jay" from here on the way out that Sunday on Lake Two. Not sure I'm keeping the canoe long term, so no BWCA.com sticker on it yet.

Today's sun makes me want to be back there!!

I read through your report, and I was compelled to check out all of the others as well. You have included some truly beautiful photography in your reports. I am glad you shared with us.

Photography is one of the primary reasons I travel to the boundary waters. The scenery is spectacular and makes for great photographs that you can cherish all your life. I hope you have many of yours framed and up on the wall.

ps. That is a beautiful canoe you own. Did you build it or purchase it?

thanks bearbrown,
searching for photos fills my daylight hours while in the bwca too.

i built the canoe a few years ago using a "bear mountain boats" design.

Nice report and pics. Do you slightly oversaturate, or do you mostly use Curves to adjust the colors? They really pop.
What's your digital hardware?

Two suggestions:
If you enable the reader to open the trip map in a new window it makes it easier to follow along.
Also, a little more information about your campsites and route would be nice, e.g., the route through Bridge Lake.

Thanks. It's always nice to see quality photography that I can set my sights toward.

I don't do much for processing other then some cropping and levels adjustment. when I shoot the photos i purposely under-expose slightly to darken the shadows and saturate the colors a little. shooting early or late in the day helps too.

hardware... nikon D200 digital and the nikon F5 film cameras. the nikon 18-35mm and 80-400mm were the lenses i used the most. also brought the 105mm macro and 28mm prime, but didn't use those much.

i'm not much of a writer and a horrible typer so i compensate by adding lots of pics :)

Bridge Lake is very pretty, wish i would have spent more time there. I was on a mission to get to my car before dark.

thanks for looking

Your photos are spectacular BearBait! I can tell you put allot of time and effort into them and the results show. The astronomy shots are mesmerizing!

It looks like you hit peak color in the foliage and had great weather.

Where is that campsite with the big sand beach? Is that on Lake Insula? I have heard people on this site mention one like that and was wondering what it looked like.

Thanks for sharing your photos.

i think Insula has a couple beach sites. the one i was at is on the south shore about a mile east from the hudson portage.
