Love your descriptions, glad you caught a fish, enjoyed hearing about the adventure, smile to think of you studying up there. You GO girl!! cowdoc is one lucky parent to have a kiddo like you out there reaching for her dreams and finding pieces of them in the BWCA. Good luck on that exam! |

quote sdebol: "Sorry to resurrect an old thread but my son and I are taking this route in late May. We've got about 6 trips in the BWCA under our belts but have never encountered beaver dams. I see from lilcowdoc's nice trip report that we'll encounter about a dozen of them(!). I've read some of the old threads about navigating over/around beaver dams, but can anyone comment on the difficulty or provide any specific tips for the ones we'll encounter on Hog Creek? I can't comment specifically on the Hog Creek ones, but I've encountered lots of beaver dams. In fact, I don't think I've ever done a trip I didn't! There's basically three kinds: Real low ones with water on top you can just paddle over. You might have to power up a little. Others you can get out on, drag the canoe over and put in the water on the other side, then get back in. Ones that are too high for that, you'll have to portage around. Unless you're the first one there, there will be a pretty obvious bushwack where others have done that. One warning: Be careful when you get out on those dams - the sticks can be very slippery! :). |
