Tom -

I saw you posted this report but have been on a road trip visiting family so didn't have a chance to read it until now that I'm home. Great report! I had to laugh about your wrong turn on the Unnamed-Grey portage (I call it "Boggy Portage") since we made that mistake in 2003 on a very tough day (the infamous "Day of the Deluge"). Such a great area. Really looking forward to the rest of your report.

PS - Nice maps!

Regarding the maps. Seems like I have trouble when using a large section of the map. For smaller sections like the Burt lake daytrip, I was real pleased. I tried to keep the files small. Someday I'll have to get some software to splice sections of maps together.

I actually had fun drawing these out. It's a good reference to have.

About the wrong turn on the portage. I think I was overconfident. A look at my compass would have told me I was going the wrong way. I know one thing, I'll always double check a route I'm doing with the Chrismar map ahead of time. I found only one wrongly parked portage with that map but lots of mistakes on the Voyager and fisher maps.

Hopefully Chrismar comes out with larger scale maps of Quetico.

This is the most enjoyable trip report I have ever seen and it is certainly getting me in the mood for our trip in August to the same area. Based on your report, I am already checking the maps for mistakes and comparing some areas on Google Earth. You mention the Voyager and Fisher maps. I have the Chrismar map and the Fisher and McKenzie maps of the area, but have not seen any Voyager maps. Does Voyager have maps of Quetico or am I missing something?

mjm, can you post a picture of your Starship? I had the gunnels completely rebuilt a couple of years ago. I paid double for them for what I paid for the canoe in 2000. But they are a thing of beauty made by the legendary Ralph Freese from Chicagoland Canoe Base.

I did the finish on them and asked him what I should use. He always liked a natural finish and told me not to stain the wood so I didn't. I put on 6 thin coats of marine spar varnish.

At my first campsite on Shade Lake I flipped the boat upside down on the rocks and when that big wind hit it moved the canoe and I now have a few souvenirs left on the gunnels. :(

Ahhh... my mistake and I'm glad that you caught it. I bought new MCKENZIE maps for part of the route and because the coloring is similar to the Voyager maps I had a brain cramp. So, anytime I refer to a Voyager map I really mean McKenzie.

Thanks for the nice words btw. Part 2 is just about done.

Awesome job on this, Tom! You get my vote for best trip report ever (maybe that's due in part to my interest in taking my first every solo trip this coming late August/early September).
Thanks again for a wonderful sharing. I'm looking forward to see your part II, ...so don't wait too long to post it!

Great report and pics, Tom! Been through those areas except the Kahs to Joyce portages. Loved the pic of your canoe on the north end of Burt....that vividly clear water is really something. Glad you were able to make use of the wood by the firepit. Looking forward to Part 2 and especially your bushwhack from Ted to Robinson.

Great report. However, I cannot get Days 7-11 to open up. I have tried several times. When I get to Day 6 and at the bottom, I press continue to Day 7 ... the next thing to show up is a page with Day 7 listed but nothing listed and it has continue to Day 8 at the bottom of page ... when I press that ...it forwards to Day 8 but has no content...this contunes through Day 11 ... no content.

Not sure why Days 1 - 6 with written notes and pictures and video's worked so smoothly ...but I can't get Days 7-11 to cooperate.

Will try again tomorrow. Enjoyed your trip report from this beautiful area.

Wally and Boonie, The trip was 10 days but because of the amount of pictures and videos I decided to split it up into two parts. I'll try to edit it so those pages don't show up and probably get the 2nd half up in a week or so.

I knew you had stayed at that site shortly before I was there. That place is something ain't it? For whatever reason I forgot to check out the site at the north end of the island when I went by fishing. I wouldn't mind taking the depth finder to Burt someday and really do some serious fishing.

The spot where I cleaned the fish was so perfect for that. I also forgot to mention that when I was cleaning the fish a yellow float plane came over the lake from the south on the east side. It then made a sharp turn and flew right by me going west. I'm always nervous when planes fly close because I immediately think the worst and that they are looking for me because of some family emergency. Luckily they kept on going.

I'm gonna try to have part 2 ready next weekend. Glad you guys enjoyed part one.

Great stuff Tom! Your report transported me to the North Woods. I appreciate the work you did putting this together. I also did videos on my solo last August, but could not get them to post in my report. You'll have to give me a lesson some day. That was a very nice smallie you landed on Burt. Anxiously awaiting part 2.
