Wow! You guys accomplished a lot in such a short trip. The first day must have been a pretty long one.

Looks like a great trip guys. I like the idea of the sons leading the parents and siblings. Way to go!

What campsite were you on when on Insula? I'm headed there this summer, trying to figure out which ones we should go for...

It was campsite 1323 on the Northeast side of the lake. It was a very nice site! Only downfall was not great tree cover and not very good fishing from camp, but otherwise wonderful site. I saw your other thread and thought about commenting but if you read this you have a good idea of what we did fishing wise. Let me know if you are looking for anymore specifics. Good luck it is a fun area. I'm curious to know how much that big fire changed the area.

Thanks for the quick reply BWfishingfanatic12. I really enjoyed your report, and appreciated your faith statements. Nothing helps me slow down from the craziness of life and appreciate His creation more than sitting around the campfire in the BW. I am champing at the bit to get out in July with my family, and the kids are old enough now that we can push a bit further in one day...they have been on the number chain twice but we're excited about Insula, day trips to Fishdance and Thomas.

I have had my eyes on 1323 as maybe our first choice if we are lucky enough to get it, and wondered more about what it is like. We'll be 8 people, one dog, three tents (one LARGE, two small), and maybe a Henessy hammock or two if the kids are feeling adventurous. We also enjoy island camping, cuz kids (and dogs) don't get lost on islands. So I am also interested in Williamson Island and a few of the other island sites up in the northern end. The terraced site just south of 1323, the beach site south of that also look good online. Looks like plenty of good fishing opportunities around that area, including maybe a day trip to try my luck at lakers up in Thomas.

This will be fun. My oldest was five when I first took him into the BWCA on Lake Two. Now he's 14, has notched five trips, and he really loves fishing. It's our favorite way to spend time together as a family. Any other advice on sites up there, fishing spots, etc I would appreciate it. I'm not really one for live bait, though, I've always had mixed luck with leeches and seem to catch as many fish on stickkbaits, spinerbaits and spoons. Handing someone $25 for a bag of blood-sucking fishfood that I need to keep alive just isn't really my favorite thing ;)

Very nice report and pics! It's great to see a family doing things together. Since this is from 2012 what other trips have you done since then? Any plans for the whole family to go again?

I took my 3 early 20's nephews to Insula in 2006. It was their first time and we stayed on Williamson Island for 3 nights before finishing a loop through Thomas to Disappointment and Snowbank. You can do this loop easily with 2 cars as it's a short shuttle drive from Snowbank to the Lake 1 entry. Next time go longer! Thanks for posting.

Is this where you cliff jumped? It's called "The Rock" on the map in Insula. This is me in 2009 with my 17 year old son doing the video. BTW, this is a fine spot for blueberries! I also found what appears to be an ancient knife blade or spear tip in the channel of water behind the "Rock" island. We had very low water conditions and normally this artifact would be in 1-2 feet of water. I love Insula and caught my largest walleye there at 27".

Cliff Jump on Insula Here's some pics of my nephews in 2006 at the same spot. Do you have pics or video of the jumps you did?

Haha yeah the first day was a dousey for sure! Well we brought our dad up because we know what were doing and he doesn't so much but yeah we were blessed with a great family! I don't know but I'm pretty sure this whole area got pretty torched by the fire so I'm curious to see how much travel will be restricted and stuff because of the burn. I'm sure some of the campsites will be unusable, plus no shade and the water has to be affected alot too. Anyone know how the fire affected permits for certain lakes or anything?

BWfishingfanatic12 - Thanks for the Trip Report and photos! The report is very good and I really enjoyed it. I am glad you and your family had a great time.
That must have been fun catching all those fish during the storm. It sounds like fishing was very good for you. You are lucky to have a great dad that brings you to the BWCA and also saves your fishing pole from being pulled in!

It sounds like you had a great trip. That is one of my favorite areas. I would like to go and do that exact route this summer to see the effects of the fire. Thanks for the report.

@TomT: Yes that is the cliff we jumped of of. Pretty fun time. We didn't fish the middle lake section at all just the Northern end.

If it was up to me I would go 7 to 10 days every time I go to the BWCA but its not up to me. Lots of schedules and time off to consider.

We have done a few trips since then with the whole family. None with all 6 of us since 2014. We went 3 times with all 6 of us. Last year Myself and a couple of my friends brought my mom and dad along with us. I haven't made a trip report for that trip yet.

One of my sisters took a bunch of pictures and videos but I'm not sure where they ever went to.

@scottttimm- sending an email to you here shortly.

I would absolutely appreciate any advice, pics, or input you have about that area that you would be willing to share.
