I have had my eyes on 1323 as maybe our first choice if we are lucky enough to get it, and wondered more about what it is like. We'll be 8 people, one dog, three tents (one LARGE, two small), and maybe a Henessy hammock or two if the kids are feeling adventurous. We also enjoy island camping, cuz kids (and dogs) don't get lost on islands. So I am also interested in Williamson Island and a few of the other island sites up in the northern end. The terraced site just south of 1323, the beach site south of that also look good online. Looks like plenty of good fishing opportunities around that area, including maybe a day trip to try my luck at lakers up in Thomas. This will be fun. My oldest was five when I first took him into the BWCA on Lake Two. Now he's 14, has notched five trips, and he really loves fishing. It's our favorite way to spend time together as a family. Any other advice on sites up there, fishing spots, etc I would appreciate it. I'm not really one for live bait, though, I've always had mixed luck with leeches and seem to catch as many fish on stickkbaits, spinerbaits and spoons. Handing someone $25 for a bag of blood-sucking fishfood that I need to keep alive just isn't really my favorite thing ;) |

I took my 3 early 20's nephews to Insula in 2006. It was their first time and we stayed on Williamson Island for 3 nights before finishing a loop through Thomas to Disappointment and Snowbank. You can do this loop easily with 2 cars as it's a short shuttle drive from Snowbank to the Lake 1 entry. Next time go longer! Thanks for posting. Is this where you cliff jumped? It's called "The Rock" on the map in Insula. This is me in 2009 with my 17 year old son doing the video. BTW, this is a fine spot for blueberries! I also found what appears to be an ancient knife blade or spear tip in the channel of water behind the "Rock" island. We had very low water conditions and normally this artifact would be in 1-2 feet of water. I love Insula and caught my largest walleye there at 27". Cliff Jump on Insula Here's some pics of my nephews in 2006 at the same spot. Do you have pics or video of the jumps you did? |

That must have been fun catching all those fish during the storm. It sounds like fishing was very good for you. You are lucky to have a great dad that brings you to the BWCA and also saves your fishing pole from being pulled in! |

If it was up to me I would go 7 to 10 days every time I go to the BWCA but its not up to me. Lots of schedules and time off to consider. We have done a few trips since then with the whole family. None with all 6 of us since 2014. We went 3 times with all 6 of us. Last year Myself and a couple of my friends brought my mom and dad along with us. I haven't made a trip report for that trip yet. One of my sisters took a bunch of pictures and videos but I'm not sure where they ever went to. @scottttimm- sending an email to you here shortly. |
