Hey,Hey, Jim ! Good to hear from you. I emailed you the list of campsites we loved and which lakes didn't really have space to accommodate 2 tents if that helps you. Our favorite on that trip was Horseshoe Lake campsite..see the email. The gravity fed Sawyer filter is our favorite. AND... That 185 rod portage --that's a doozy... Can't imagine that one with an aluminum canoe, but better people then me do it. Heard its the 3rd hardest in the BWCA. I'd love to see the other 2 harder ones (not). Can't wait to read your report Jim. Have a safe and fun trip."
Saw your email--thanks for the info! Yeah...not looking forward to that portage but it is what it is. I've seen it compared to the Canoe-Pine portage by Johnson Falls. I've hiked that one back and forth with no gear and that was tough enough. Have also seen it compared to the Knife-Vera portage which I have done WITH gear. That was surely a challenge but turned out to be not quite as bad as I was dreading. I've seen the Sandpit-Mudro portage mentioned as well for it's similar, quick elevation changes and I also survived that one OK with the canoe. This year will be with aluminum canoes so we'll see how it goes. We'll just have to go slow and steady working as a team. I'm feeling thankful that this oldster will be tripping with a 25 year old and two 17 year old!

Yes, Ted... Please do. I almost posted his photo in our trip report so that someone might recognize him. He really made our late night portage and lack of campsites a better experience. He made our night and the next morning they paddled by and he saw us and asked about our site. Very good person at a very welcomed time.

The knife-vera portage is nothing compared to the 185... Did that one a few years ago. Did the vera to ensign 180 last week..(in fact did two 180's that day having left kekekabic area and around)... Did the 240 on that side as well, it wasn't too bad, pretty flat in comparison. Be prepared for that 185, it is like a stairway to.... well, you get the idea. Everyone should experience it. lol

The "youngsters" were great on this trip. They performed like champs! The 185-rod portage we were worried about was challenging but we handled it just fine.
Overall it was a great trip and I hope to have a trip report on it posted if I ever get to doing the video I've planned as well!

They are not terrible, I guess, I just compared prices, and looked at the overall experience. We have used them and our friends have used them many times. We have used others on the Gunflint side (i.e., Clearwater Lodge is fantastic). Next year we will try Ely and stay in town. Looking forward to the change. If anyone has any good/bad experiences with them, let us know. We did check out their prices, more reasonable, and newer canoes. Bunkhouse has its own facilities. Looks good so far.
