Great trip report...always fun to read about an area we've just been through from other paddlers. We camped at the same Horseshoe site right after plainspaddler... met him at the entry point landing and then camped on the same site later in the day. Fun that it was occupied for a solid week by bwca.com-ers!


Moose sightings were almost commonplace in our two days on the lake. Wonder if the video I captured of Mama and two babies were the same family you saw on your trip.


When we did the Horseshoe to Vista portage a week after you, the rains had made it even more difficult. it was like walking through a really rocky river with fast moving water in a few places. We were glad it was just a daytrip and that we didn't have to navigate it with all of our gear.

That's great. I totally agree, much more difficult than the Skipper portage. The whole time I kept thinking this has to be longer than 290r.

I stayed at the same site on Horseshoe 2 years ago in June and also liked it. We saw a cow and calf moose in the same spot as you and just sat in the canoe and watched them for 2 hours. I love that area and Mike and Lin are great. The one time we did the Meeds portage it was raining which made it not fun. I thought it was much harder than the Skipper portage.

I agree with the Meeds portage being an 8. We've done it a few times. My favorite time was when my son finally was old enough to carry the canoe although a heavy duluth pack still makes the knees wobble by the end. Love the trip report - been to all the places you wrote about. Great memories!

Nice Report. We stayed in the same campsite later that day until the 29th. Great campsite and we saw moose every day including the cow and the two calves. I hate to be a complainer, but I could have done without all the pistachio hulls all over by the firepit though!

How bad were the Bugs in June?

You know, the mosquitos were pretty vicious on the portages, but around camp they really weren't that bad. The flies were pretty much non-existent where we camped, but the skeeters would come out randomly. Nothing a little bug spray couldn't manage.


A friend was up on Rose Lake the week prior and got demolished by the no-see-ums.

Sorry for our mess. I should have made a better attempt to sweep them up. Hope you enjoyed your trip though.

Next time do what we do...bring the shelled pistachios. No muss no fuss!


I love that area and try to make it into Horseshoe at least once a year. That lake is always a good bet for moose spotting.
