nice trip, seems this area is popular with soloists.
it is tough to decide what to do with stuff you find. on one trip, we were along the border somewhere around the little/big knife portages and found a USFS pack and it was stuffed to the gills with dust pans, whisk brooms on the top, we didn't dig any further since it wasn't our pack and it didn't contain food that might attract animals. so, we waited and watched to see if someone would be paddling back since we hadn't seen anyone from the direction we'd come. no one.... we debated what to do. we had a long way to travel and portage (monument plus all the portages coming up the granite river to gunflint lake), this is a USFS pack, what happens if we take it and are caught with it, we decide to have a portage snack and wait a few minutes. well, then we tried lifting it. that sealed the deal. sorry, USFS! we moved the pack back off the portage by a rock so it wasn't in the way. we kept any eye open and never saw another person. called the USFS upon our return, they were bummed we didn't bring it out, now they had to flip a coin to see who had to go back for it.
