The hawks that I had tentatively identified as Sharp-shinned earlier this year were probably Cooper's hawks. A few weeks ago I noticed a platform nest high in a deciduous tree about 100 yards from our house. The hawks were landing on it. After looking at my latest pictures, i see that the top of the head is quite dark relative to the back. That and the choice of nest indicates that they are Cooper's hawks.
The robin population has been diminishing, probably because of the hawks. I haven't seen many House Sparrows, either. The Cardinals are quite bold, as are the Blue Jays, despite the hawks' presence. I just saw some Gold Finches this morning.
Platform nest is in the fork of the tree to the right and higher than the bird.
