Got snowshoes and skiis ready to go.

Last year I got only three solid weeks of classic skiing and about a month (at the beginning) of skate skiing on the lakes. Here's hoping for steady, abundant snow.
On a side note it was -10 and windy this morning here in Deadhorse.....

last winter i skied the man made snow at wirth and elm creek, three times a week. it sucked bad. great stuff if you are a young pup willing to grunt up the monster hills in the weird fake snow, then the pretend snow froze into a spectacularly hard ice. the downhills were torturous, many an expert skier had troubles in the steep curves throughout the courses. still i am thankful for the opportunity that these venues provided me. i was skiing after all. but really, this was not what we want for skiing pleasure. plus i know better than to prey for snow.

would love for the snow to fall about 2 inches every day all winter from December 1-March 15, then have the lakes open up but keep the snow on the ground.
is this a lot to ask? can't mother nature multi-task?

It was great to ski the Hidden Valley Trails this morning. I started out at 8:00am and met a guy deer hunting with a muzzleloader near the gravel pit. I was wearing my dark brown coat and wished I would have had an orange vest on top of it. He said he didn't see very many skiers out that early. I probably should wear blaze orange anywhere in the woods now until wolf hunting is over at the end of January.
I thought muzzleloader guns were supposed to be traditional but this one had lighted sights that glowed like an LED. He was a nice guy and seemed careful enough hunting near an area with skiers close by.
I think I skied on one of the trails that were greatly improved last summer with Legacy Fund dollars. It climbs up a hill where you get a distant view of a lake.
The trail maintenance crew was getting ready to groom the trails at 10:30am when I left. It will probably be even better tomorrow morning as the new snow sets up.
It may be one of the best areas in the state to ski now and I hope the predicted rain comes as snow this weekend.

What day was this beautiful picture taken? Hanging pretty heavy.
I heard that Sawbill lake got 11 inches on November 23rd.?

Although Hidden Valley Ski area in Ely is not advertising that the trails are open the Nordic Wolves High School Ski Team did practice there yesterday and today on rock skis.
I am going to go there tomorrow morning and hopefully get some skiing in before the forecasted rain comes this weekend.
There appears to be about 8 inches in the yard.
Changing gears quickly with paddling last Thursday and possibly skiing tomorrow and ice fishing the small lakes soon.

Beautiful! I was hoping to get out this weekend on the golf course on the little bit of snow we got here near Brainerd, but time did not allow. Not enough snow now and the forecast isn't promising. Might have to head up to the North shore in the near future.

Banks- love the purple light your photo captured. New desktop. I'm always amazed at the variation of light in a winter scene.

Unfortunately some of that purple light is due to the camera's difficulty in correctly choosing a white balance in low light and snow, I did not take the time to process from RAW to try and correct it.

nice! looks like the ely side might have a bit more than the gunflint side. we're forecasted to get snow this weekend fri/sat.

this was shot on sunday the 25th. seems to slow lightly a little bit every day.

Skied 15km at Hidden Valley this afternoon, on good skis without and incidents beyond bits of grass peaking through in spots. I got home after a week away, ten inches on the deck, took the skis out of the rafters, hot waxed one pair (skating) and headed for the trails. No track for classic yet, but I think there is enough snow that it could be set soon.
