Anyone going hunting?

Not hunting them but I've seen them all over the place near the Sherburne Wildlife Refuge.

o yea i am going opening day and I have Monday and Tuesday off as well. My son is on Spring break we will be hunting hard. Here is a bird from the area we hunt.

Nice bird,and it seems like of any hunting type it is a time that adults get out with their sons or daughters to go hunting, Good luck.

One thing with bow hunting now you can hunt all the seasons,instead of just a slot of 7 days. I have a friend does well bow hunting. Though of going that way,but the confidence in my shooting is not quite there."
I saw that, I love that hunting bow really extends your hunting seasons for both turkey and deer. I shoot pretty consistently throughout the late spring through the fall but I really fall off on my practice during the winter so it makes a spring turkey bow hunt tough. I'd want to be in peak fall form during the spring if I were going to hunt turkey with my bow.

You also can hunt any zone which would be nice. Going shotgun this year,maybe next with the bow. Much more hunting opportunity as you suggest.

never seen a turkey in BWCA, but then I rarely see anything other than grouse and other winged creatures there

No and you won't for awhile,maybe a 100 miles to the south.
At one time Mn DNR said they never would survive in the Mille lacs area or to the north. Well they are doing good at least 40 miles north of Mille lacs with are mild winters. The owls sure do like them tho.

They are just outside of the Superior National Forest due north of Two Harbors.

I remember being excited to see them in Carlos Avery WMA north of the Cities back in 1980. I think that was also where they were being introduced. Now you can even see them inside the city limits of St Paul.
The first time I saw them up by my cabin was five or six years ago. I thought the turkeys had escaped captivity and wouldn’t be able to survive the winter. Many years there is over two feet of snow on the ground from late December to late March. I suppose they could be getting hand outs. I do know there are a lot of Beaked Hazelnuts in the understory up there.

Its amazing how they have adapted,like around Brainerd I think many of the places they make it up north they are getting feed from bird feeders or handouts in tough winters.
I remember like 1970 they were having a tough time reintroducing them into even southeastern Minnesota. Mn DNR was trading bear and ruff grouse with I believe Arkansas and Missouri for Turkeys. I remember they were trapping bear up by Ely for exchange.

The hard winters of 2012-13 and 2013-14 in the Mille lacs area over half died of starvation. You could find the dead ones. This last couple of years now they are thriving and in my area we are at historical highs. I even shot a turkey up by Longville in the fall season.
Around home now you see them in picked corn fields and around housea alot. They will disperse pretty soon. They are starting to strut a little.

Yes far far south of the BWCA. Like around Mille lacs.
I am pretty new to this sport. To me I like just getting out in the woods in the spring. My season starts April 22 in Minnesota for me.

Well I am taking my 6 year old out in the AM - he has been pumped for some time. His older brother 8 shot his first last year (on my lap, Me holding gun, He pulled trigger) He went out for his first youth hunt. Could not get the toms in closer than 40 yards - it was difficult for him to understand I would not let him shot - he is only good out to about 20 yards but he still had fun.
