I would use a soft case that floats if I wanted to use a case.
FYI: Minnesota doesn't require you to have a case in a canoe used under paddle!

Ok. Thanks for the advice. Two good options!

The inexpensive, possibly adequate version: Buy an Uncle Mike's Sealtector Gun sleeve – http://www.unclemikes.com/products/bags-cases/shotgun-rifle-cases/sealtector™-gun-sleeve-od-green-52. Put the rifle in another soft case that will provide sufficient flotation (maybe with some foam added inside the Sealtector) and test the rig at home.

The deluxe and by all accounts utterly reliable version: Nomar Waterproof Rifle Scabbard – https://nomaralaska.com/products/waterproof-rifle-scabbard?variant=37751850830

I relied on the former for a moose hunt last fall in the Lower 48. If I were living in AK again or traveling annually on the water, I'd probably spring for the Nomar, which I drooled over last fall.

3 of us are planning on deer hunting this year in the BWCA. Does anyone have a recommendation on cases to pack in rifles?
