Bagged my first turkey Sunday morning. First time I have been turkey hunting. I have to say it is a lot more fun and exciting than deer hunting. Very interactive.

Congrats! I've never turkey hunted because I fear that it would become very addicting.

Smoked is much better than baking like a domestic turkey. My father almost gave up the hunt after my mother fixed one like a Thanksgiving turkey. Dad reconsidered after my brother-in-law gave him some of the one he got and smoked.

Beautiful birds. I had one strutting around my yard in Oakdale a few weeks ago.

@ walleye_hunter - I would say it will become very addicting. I love deer, waterfoul and upland bird hunting and have been doing it for 30 some years but this was a heck of a lot more fun. I was ready to go get another license as the last seasons are over the counter, then I found out I can only get one turkey. I have been practicing the box and slate calls a lot the last couple months and that is really fun. Hearing the gobbles from different directions and hoping that they come in really pushes up the excitement level. Then seeing them and trying to get them to change directions. What a blast. Two of the three mornings I was out I ended up right under birds that were still in the roost (have to get out really early). The gobble, gobble, gobble and walk around the branches until they come down. They are very, very loud as well when very close to them.

It's amazing how big they are. A lot bigger than they look from a distance. Big wing spread, tall and pretty heavy.

@ inspector13 - I have talked to a lot of people about how to make them. My dad did a lot of turkey hunting in the SE corner of MN in the 90's and early 2000's. He said the only way to do it in the oven is in a baking bag and maybe some bacon drapped over it like a goose. My mom disagreed and said she didn't like it in any way. Was always dry. A guy here at work told me his dad will do a light saltwater soak in a 5 gallon bucket prior to roasting in the oven.
Another guy at work puts the carved meat into a pan with some type of soup like cream of mushroom and then rotates the meat every once in a while.
So I have been a bit torn over how to make it. I want it to be delicious. If not, my lady might not ever want to try making another. We will both be doing this one. She was leaning toward smoking originally and I like the idea of smoking it. I don't have a smoker though. Easily solved with a trip to Fleet Farm though.
I'll let you know what we do and how it turns out.

Self portait in the woods. I learned that there are no cut down trees with flat stumps to use as a spot to set a camera using the timer. In the future I will make sure some stumps are flat.
