Ive seen and shot several grouse around Polly Lake. And the farthest campsite on the lake is one of the nicest ive been to in the fall. Lots of room yet several trees in and around camp block the wind on the cooler days, but the sun still shines!
Happy hunting!

Hey, thanks for the help guys! I'll check those areas out. I've been in through Lizz twice but in the spring. Nice area.

quote walleye_hunter: "The portage between Rush L and Banadad L crosses the Banadad ski trail. You could spend an entire day hiking on that trail and I'm sure you could round up a few grouse. It is a bit wet in a few places if I remember correctly."
Good call! How did I forget about that:( Here's a pic of it.

I think that would be a great route for a solo. Not sure on the grouse population though. In Sept. there is a decent chance of not seeing anyone from Skipper all the way until you get to Long Island. We only saw 1 group per day over 4 days on an Aug. trip from Skipper to Banadad and back. We've entered at Lizz a couple of times also and I love that area. Good area for seeing moose. Horseshoe and Omega are two of my favorite lakes. Allen, Pillsbury, and Henson are also nice smaller lakes that even in Aug. had fewer people around than some of the others in that area.
I've seen grouse on Sawbill Lake in Oct.(walked right into camp at 2 different sites) and have seen lots and heard them drumming at Kawishiwi Lake on different June trips. I've seen a lot of "road" hunters in Oct. on the forest roads from Kawishiwi Lake to Sawbill Lake and over past Baker Lake and Brule Lake areas. Maybe some of those area BWCA entry points would be good for grouse hunting???????

Thinking about taking my shotgun along this September on my first solo and trying to find a bird or two for supper. I've never hunted ruffed grouse so any suggestions on entry points, specific areas, map features and habitats to look for would be greatly appreciated. Would prefer an EP on the Gunflint but I'm open to others. Right now I'm thinking about entering at EP 49 Skipper Lake and coming out at EP 47 Swamp Lake. Any thoughts? Thanks!
