last year was very slow for most of northern Minnesota. Indications are the hatch was better this year, but will they survive and we started out at such low numbers.

Saw one at the Bog Lake entry point. It would have been easy to shoot him, as I got to within 3 feet of it and he just stood there staring at me. So I took a picture instead.

Spruce grouse-the males are really pretty.

Do you suggest a .410 or .22lr for hauling in the canoe? I might be going on my first fall trip this weekend or next.

How likely are you to see grouse or rabbits while traveling? I've only been in the BWCA 4 times at 4th of July.

Depends all on chance. Once I went in September and we saw them and heard them drumming all over. Have also seen rabbits running around campsite.

I just got back from a trip and packed a Ruger .22lr revolver. Heard distant drumming once and one time walking through the woods heard one flush but did not see it. I regret hauling it around for 5 days.

I think you're better off bringing fishing equipment IMHO. Unless you guys are planning on beating through the brush looking for them.

Spent a fair amount of time hiking many trails along the Gunflint in early August and despite actively listening I heard zero drumming. Had my vizsla out for a run on a few of the trails as well and he didn't pick up on anything either.

I wonder if many people got out opening week with bird numbers down the last few years. I love it when I can find a nice non motorized trail and walk for hours back deep into the woods. getting harder to find.
