Wouldn't her phone make the most sense for this application? If she had an app like BackCountry Navigator and downloaded the map of the area she was running in she could use her phones GPS. I use it, works great for me in the BWCA. I figure as a runner she's not going to want to carry extra weight and likely takes her phone for safety.

Thanks guys, I'll look into those options.
She typically has poor to no reception where she runs, but if she downloads maps prior, I assume that would solve that problem.

I imagine she is already bringing her phone on runs for something to listen to, so why add more tech and weight when lightweight and minimal is best?

I personally use Gaia GPS for hiking and trips in the BWCA. You can download maps so no cell signal is needed. Multiple different basemaps and overlays. You can buy her one of the memberships they offer. Even the 5 year premium membership is cheaper than many GPS units.

My daughter is a big trail runner. She will frequently do 20-30 mile runs around Flagstaff or Sedona AZ. She'll run even with snow on the ground and has gotten mis-directed (aka temporarily lost) a couple of times, because the trails are snow covered.
She always finds her way out, but I'm looking for a nice, simple to use, lightweight GPS unit for her to bring on her runs. Anyone have suggestions?
thanks
