Indeed there are free maps that work with Google Earth (on your iPhone) available for download. I've used them while in the BWCA. Send me an email and I can send you the link.

I've had good success with the Garmin Explore app on my iPhone. Easy to download different layers ahead of time and the campsites/portages are marked on the map. I'll usually add some custom waypoints ahead of time with campsite notes or portage lengths for my planned route.

Have recently received an Iphone 13 and would like to use it this summer in the BWCA for navigating and fishing. Have a Deeper Pro2 Cast GPS for fishing but would like to install mapping that shows campsites and portages, etc. Does the Garmin Topo Boundary Waters work on an Iphone or is there another product that would work better?

Download the GAIA GPS or US TOPO app onto the phone. Campsites and portages can be added via the files from this site in the gps section. Have had no problems using this cell phone feature. I don't have an iPhone, but use a Samsung S9.

It doesn't appear so. Here's a list of compatible devices. I've usually sided with those who've discouraged using an iPhone for navigation, as there are units much better suited for wilderness use. A smart phone user will need to prepare for dealing with limitations such as battery life, water resistance, cost-to-benefit ratio, etc
