I use a Ram mount for my GPS and camcorder. I rarely have my GPS turned on during a portage. Usually it gets turned on while looking for a portage or campsite or during a tricky navigation spot.

Another RAM bicycle mount user here. Just leave it clipped into the mount during portages.

I only keep the Vexlar on during fishing days.

I leave mine on and attached to the thwart. I track my distance traveled including portages, so I don't turn it off until I am in camp.

I stick mine in my pants pocket on portages. Compass goes in one pocket, gps in the other.

Where do you put your gps on the portage so you can get a bread crumb track on your portage?
Thanks

I attach it to my pfd (which I wear on the portage)with a biner and tuck it into a pocket on the pfd or slip it under the pfd.

Cargo type pants. Always in side or front leg pocket.

My GPS is always in the sunglass pocket in the top of my camelbak.

Mine is always attached to the canoe thwart with a RAM mount bracket made for that purpose. Rock solid. I flip it down inside the canoe but probably wouldn't really need to do that. This way, even if we double portage, the gps records just one trip over the trail.

I use a RAM Mount for a bike handlebar. Either on a thwart or footbrace. Gps stays in the mount and reads fine thru the canoe hull.

PS: schweady beat me to it while I was adding photos. bh

I have the RAM mount too. Does the U bolt mount fit around the thwart?"

The covered canoe is a Wenonah Moccasin with al. thwarts, it fit fine. The other shot is on a Wenonah foot brace, another secure fit.

Here it's on the footbrace of my Advantage, stays there most of the trip including the portages.

I guess I have mine along for recording documentation of distance and time taken to travel, not for finding my way. My 62st has the ability to compute moving time, stopped time, average speed, average moving speed, etc. So, if it is turned on at the beginning of particular route and left on to the end, it provides more useful answers to post-trip questions like 'How long was it from A to B?' and 'What did we save by single portaging that one?'. Even with this method, I only need to change batteries every 2-3 days.

chesapeakes: I use the RAM-B-121BU yoke clamp base which will fit rails in diameter from 0.625" to a maximum of 1.25". The 1" rubber ball is at a right angle to the plane of the mount; when connected to a rail, the ball sits parallel to the rail.

I mark the portages and campsites. When I get to a portage I take it off the mount and slide it in my PFD shut off. I feel no need to leave it on when on a portage. If I were to get off the trail I could just go to the portage.

Thanks to all the help. I've always just used maps. I want to see what it is like with a gps. Can't wait to see the download to the computer when I get back.
