There is no scarcity of maps for Wabakimi, it's probably better mapped than WCPP, but promotion of the park is sadly lacking. It could however be a part of the park's long range plans as a refuge for Woodland Caribou. Keep the crowds (?) away.

I make it no secret that I am a supporter of Red Lake Outfitters and consider Harlan a friend. Having said that I will admit that the maps not only met my expectations but have exceeded them. I wasn't sure what to expect and figured on a large, laminated cumbersome map which would be prone to delaminating as per some other maps I have used in the past here in Florida. These are far superior durability wise and far more practical for daily use. Instead of having one large topo map (52M for example) the chart is broken down into several smaller pages and each laminated very sturdily.
A size which will fit into an average map case but with a very readable scale and portages and campsites plainly visible. Perfecto!!

Glad they arrived and that you are enjoying them. We're proud of our efforts on that project so it's great to hear they met with your expectations.
Campsite.....noted and thank you. When creating the project, we intended for there to be revisions over the years and you received version 2.0! It's been a massive undertaking so far and we'll continue to update for years to come.

Back into town and the first mail I opened was Harlans maps. Very nice.......I like the sizing, each map is laminated very sturdily, nothing flimsy. They are cut at an ideal size to fit into a map case. Portages highlighted in red and campsites in a triangular green. I like these a lot and am glad I picked them up.
Only one suggestion.........the very best campsite by far on Musclow lake, where the Musclow river leaves the lake, is not noted on your map ;-)

I already have my route planned out and on my GPS for my June trip. Your maps will complement that nicely, along with the Chrismar park map.
Having good maps makes trip planning easier and removes some of the uncertainty of trying a new area. Although these are wilderness parks and solitude is crucial, the fact is that decreasing use is not a good thing. If people don't go there, they don't appreciate the parks and over time, they will be lost. The BWCA is facing a huge threat right now from sulfide ore mining, and park users will be crucial in saving the wilderness. Who knows when somebody will aim their sights on WCPP or Wabakimi or their watersheds for some kind of negative resource extraction...

I could not agree more... The threat to these areas is immense. Just look at what is happening stateside.

I bought some of these from Harlan at the Midwest Mountaineering Expo, and they are high-quality & meant for a paddling adventure...
Good maps that can stand up to field use are hard to come by and these are the real deal.

Joe, Yes, it's split up into 9 waterproof pages in 1:50,000 scale detail. All campsites and portages have been digitally annotated onto the map.....high visibility, waterproof and easy to work with in a canoe....no more folded maps or map cases!

You want wabakimi maps? Do a search of "Wabakimi Project". This group has been clearing portages and opening new routes since 2004. They likely have the most complete maps of the park.

First trip to WCPP in June 2018. So, I may be a little slow...so each map set for $23.95 is one 1:50,000 topo, divided into 9 pages?
Are they available at Red Lake Outfitters in Red Lake? If so I'll pick up a set when I get up there.

Thanks for the tips guys. It's good to know there are maps to be found! But there aren't Fisher or McKenzie maps, nor the waterproof Adventure maps available for Wabakimi. It takes a bit more research and planning is a lot harder, than it is for Quetico. In any rate, I'm glad Harlan is making maps, I will be buying a set for my trip in June for sure

Hey there,
Yes, we've had the maps ready for this past season and have distributed several hundred at this point. Each topo map will have all campsite and portage info annotated digitally onto the 1:50,000 scale. We've managed to cut the large size map into 9 section sheets, fully laminated and waterproof.....it all makes it very easy to work and navigate with.
In saying that, i need to update the website (i'll do that tomorrow), as the pricing is wrong for our maps. If you'd like our booklets, each map set is $23.95.

OK groovy.
I'm back and feeling good. Lund to Bigshell is back on via Linge, Olive, and the Sabourin River. The campsite info is accurate or should I just bring a saw? (I'm KIDDING!) Pretty sure I just need 2 maps.
Accomplices are encouraged to apply. Must have own boat and tent and own vehicle in case of early departure.

I'll chime in only because I was just looking myself. If you have the Chrismar Adventure Map of Woodland Caribou, it has the 1:50,000 top index map on it in the lower right hand corner, using the same alphanumeric code that Harlan uses.

I did see that the topo index gives a general idea of the coverage of each of Harlans map sets, but I would like to know the boundaries with more precision. Maybe the easiest way would be for you to give us (also print on your map sets?) the Latitude and Longitude of the dividing lines on the topo index and we could use an adventure map to come pretty darn close. For example, by just eyeballing it the line between 52L15 and 52L16 is about 390.400mE.

I can't find it again on facebook, but I thought I saw that Harlan was finishing a set of topo maps with portages and campsites marked. Anyone else hear this?

Hey guys.....yes, it's true. I have a final draft version of 52L15 that i'm proofing right now, and should be available shortly. Once i'm satisfied with it i'll be following suit with all other topo's for the park. I'm hoping to have everything complete for May 1!
