Someone must have had a reason for making a portage...." I completely agree. The obscure VO map of the lake is marked as having both pike and pickerel (walleye) but who knows if this is true or not. If all goes as planned we are planning to spend a night on this lake. There is no way I can pass by without checking it out, even if it is only for exploring and checking out the scenery.

sns	02/17/2021 02:53PM   CedarHill, nice find on that map. Shows that it had Walleye and Pike. Possible it was a portage lake for the Viking outpost on Optic, but I could be wrong. Even if correct, I bet the viking guests almost never went that far and it now only sees paddlers, and a scant few of those. Can't wait to get back once the border reopens. After your trip, would love to get your report to live it vicariously...
sns	02/12/2021 07:09PM   I think I at least know the lakes you are talking about, though they are unnamed on all my maps and I've not been to that part of the park yet. To be clear, are you eyeing the one to the east of the lake in-between MH & Glenn, long and fairly narrow, oriented more-or-less NW-to-SE? If so, I have looked at that one on the maps before... One map I have shows a 50m portage heading from the eastern lobe of that in-between lake to the lake I think you're targeting. Another map shows it at 37m. Eastern tip burned in 2016, but indeed most looks to be a more mature forest. One would think it would have more than just pike in it.
hamillsc	02/25/2021 09:35PM   I made it into those lakes in 2018. I recall portages being more of a bushwhack, but short and fairly easy to find a route alongside a creek. It is a mature and beautiful area. From a distance, the island in the middle of the last large lake in the chain looked promising for a camp, but we didn’t venture far enough to see for sure. This area is high on my list to explore once the border opens back up.
CedarHillX	02/16/2021 12:27PM   Yes, that’s the lake. It is unnamed on all my maps as well except for a map I found on the Viking Outpost website. Claire reached out and has encouraged me to check it out even though it’s been a few years since that portage has been visited by clearing crews. If we make it back this summer, pending health orders and vaccine rollout, we have labelled this lake as a “must visit”. Cheers
