Bdbguy... you visited a great area. Probably the more traveled route of WCPP, but a great route. Keep going back. |

-- terrain and area similar to bdub, maybe a bit more barren, less brush, more rock, moss and lichens -- walleye fishing was very good on Mex Hat and Glenn. I caught three trout over the week. Not near as many pike as I would have expected. We did not fish going in or coming out. -- the campsites are rugged, but beautiful spots. We stayed at three different sites, two of which hadn't been used this year (had to clear downed trees). Plenty of firewood available right at the site unlike bdub. Our preferred site was occupied on Mex Hat. Stayed on the large island mid lake. Very nice... -- saw a cow caribou - that was cool - as well as moose and bear -- portages seemed shorter in general than in bdud, but more rugged, can tell much less traveled. The portage to glenn hardly looked used. Much thanks to Harlan and his crews for clearing the downed trees and marking the portages. -- speaking of Harlan, we used Red Lake Outfitters to shuttle us to entry point. I would recommend, the road is brutal. Harlan was great to work with - very responsive and helpful. Did his best to make sure our trip was as successful as possible. Thanks Harlan. For those considering WCPP, I would highly recommend. It is probably what the bdub was 150 years ago. We saw very few parties the whole week. Walleye fishing was great, even with the great weather. We had a northern lights display one night that we will never forget. It was a great trip. I will be back... |

We just got back from our base camp trip to Glenn (1 1/2 weeks ago). We can gladly share fishing tips. We caught most of our walleyes trolling bright colored crank baits, fire tiger was the best and second the gold. We did jig one day with an anchor and caught them on gold and silver jigs tipped with gulp minnows. Look for points with good rock structure. A portable depth finder is very helpful. If you don't have a depth finder, jig where you catch them trolling. We caught lots of northerns on Glenn, however, most were small. Our largest was 30 inches. The bigger northerns were caught in 20+ feet of water trolling. Happy fishing! Btw, the water is really high. The sand beaches on Glenn are underwater. |

Mind you its also dependent on wind, water temps, sun, etc. I caught 80% of them jigging - scented paddle tails (trigger X). Finding moving water was the key for my boat. Looked for creeks dumping into the lake on the map. During the day with high sun they were deeper, 12-15 ft. As sun went down, they moved into shallower water. Caught many on a shallow flat as sun was going down casting shad raps and the like. Caught some trolling cranks. Partner caught a bunch casting a generic red and white spoon. They didn't seem too fussy once you found them. I caught all my trout while jigging for walleyes - odd. Casted and trolled spoons and cranks a fair amount without success. I've not fished for trout much - it showed... |
