Anyone put any thought into these homemade wood stoves to cook on?

I did a lot of searching fora little wood stove.. I made my own out of a coffee can, following the bushbuddy style. However it melted on me when my camping buddy added to much wood. So I bought a littlebug senior. It packs really nice and has worked well for me.. I would like to make another small stove.

How about with an Esbit tablet? Would that still be considered an open flame? If so, I guess you could still use the stove to support a small pop-can alcohol stove.

I've been forced to cook with fire when my stove broke on a trip but I'm not sure if I'm ready to make a conscious decision to do it on purpose. I love the idea of not having to carry fuel.

I will be trying mine out next week. Heading in EP 23 for 5 days. This is only coming along for fun - not necessity.

I have an emberlit, which is quite similar. I really like it. It takes some getting used to and I don't think I would ever take it as my only stove. But, it is much smaller (packs flat) and lighter than a regular second stove, and allows me to take much less fuel, as I don't need to worry about running out. If I run out, I just switch to the emberlit.
