This might be a decent machine to try if you think you might be interested in sewing some of your own gear.

Very true. Mostly plastic with no solid metal frame makes them spongy. An old 201 or 301 will be 10 times better even though they were made in the forties or fifties. With what I need to sew, any good straight stitch machine is fine. These are still around and very usable.

Singer isn't what it used to be. Go to a independent sewing machine company and you can probably find a good quality machine at a good price.
