Every time I go to REI i stare at the sam splint. Just never boight one yet. Thanks for the reminder.
2 more things I added... A knee brace and a wrist brace. When I injured my knee pn the BRT the Ace bandge just did not cut it.

Take Steri Strips instead of butterflies and Coban instead of a lot of tape.

I have a Sam Splint that I bring but never thought to bring braces... great idea.

There are some really good threads just like this over the past couple years. Click on the Search link above and enter "first aid kit". Lots of good info. I personally like to assemble my own kits, but thats me.

Hey everyone,
I need to build or buy a new first aid kit for an upcoming trip. What items would you consider essential for BWCA camping. I guess just for a baseline, a kit for 4 people over 5 days.
I've been looking at some prepackaged kits on Amazon, but haven't been too impressed with any.

Thanks! Wow, I definitely should have searched first. There are almost as many threads on first aid kits as there are on "how are the bugs?"

A good place to start is the list from the Boy Scout canoe base. List
Ask about allergies from everyone in the group. Make a list, keep it in the first aid kit. I've adapted my kit for crewmates with latex allergies and penicillin allergies.
My newest addition are "cheater" glasses. I also have some leftover pain meds and antibiotics. Sanitary napkins make good compresses. I am replacing superglue with glues designed for tissue. In a pinch I'd still use superglue but be aware that it is not totally
Most of all, take a course. Regular first aid courses today are not enough IMO. It's all about call 911. Wilderness first aid is more like 'old' first aid courses. The premise being in the city help is minutes away, in the wilderness it is hours or days away. When an ambulance is 5 minutes away, lots of first aid can be harmful... But those 'harmful' techniques can be the difference between life and death in the wilderness.

my newest addition is the Sam Splint We took wilderness first aid and I saw how much simpler the sam splint made things.
