I bought my kids double layered blackbirds for our Quetico trip in the end of May. I was thinking a closed cell foam between the layers and zero degree sleeping bag. Do you experienced hangers think this will be warm enough? I'm expecting nights in the low to mid 40's. They are teen age boys so they are more tolerant than I would be.

When I first started hanging, I used a 1" self inflating pad with a 0 degree bag as a top quilt. I slept down to freezing many times with no problems. It wasn't my most comfortable sleep, that didn't come until I got rid of the pad, but for what you need I think it would be adequate.

I agree it should be okay. Having on some long heat retaining pants and shirt with a stocking cap and heavy socks should give any needed extra insulation. I wear a jogging suit designed for winter running if temps drop low. It holds the heat when I roll out in the morning until I can get on the pants and fleece.

It will work. That is similar to what I have been doing since I started hanging. However, condensation between the bag and the pad has always been an issue. I am finally trying an underquilt this year to rectify that situation.

Last weekend I layed out for several hours w/ my 40 degree UQ which wasn't sufficient [for me] in 38-45 degree weather. (I sleep SO COLD)
This weekend I'm laying out in my hammock with my Exped Downmat 7 - and my 40 degree UQ if needed...
I did take a Sunday nap with JUST my Exped, and zero degree top quilt/sleeping bag and found it to be exceptionally warm and comfortable... I kind of want to take it along just for coziness....
If my weekend hang isn't sufficient, I'm buying the zero degree Hammock Gear Econ Underquilt. This weekend is my test.
