I have been bitten through the hammock. I believe it was one of those Asian tiger mosquitoes. Permethrin does not kill immediately on impact.

looking at the Blackbird the comments from owners are that the double layer prevents and insect bites from below!!!

I don't think they could get me through the double layer on the WBBB, but I also treat the hammock like I do my clothes....with permethryn.
Since I started soaking clothes, hat, tarp, hammock (first time this year), and tent I have 2 total bug bites. Not bad for three years in my opinion.
When we stopped at Devil's Cascade for lunch last May the skeet's were swarming so bad that I thought for sure I was going to get eat'n alive, put my hat on and they were gone.

Yep treating the hammock with permethrin made a huge difference for me too. Now it's like laying in a "no fly zone" for bugs.
I've never had one bite me through the hammock though (even before permethrin) usually the combination of clothes, pad, or sleeping bag/quilt kept me pretty well protected. They might be able to bite through just the nylon but add a layer of clothing to it and I doubt they can get through.

Bumping this as many responding to the pad inquiry add the pad as bug protector.

My experience is exactly like keth0601 says.
I've used an ENO and now have a Clark. Bugs aren't an issue while you in the hammock. It's when you get out that you have to worry.

When I was researching my decision on first hammock one item that came up was bugs biting through the hammock. The full net cocoon with big zipper and the available extra widths led me to the Hammock Bliss. When I look at the ENO, Blackbird and others I wonder what keeps the biters from getting to you from below? I know a pad will help, but what if part of you is over the edge of the pad?
What do you folks do?

I have the double layer blackbird so they should not be able to get through it, but I soak everything in permethryn. The other boys tent, tarps, clothes, head net, hats, and so on.
I'm one of those that buys my it at Fleet Farm and for around $15-$16 a quart, and I get a little over 5 gallons of the mix after I dilute it.

I have a ENO with an underquilt. I have never had a bug bite through any part of the hammock. With this setup the bug would have needed a 4 inch straw to get to me.

I have a WBBB double layer. Never any problems with skeeters.

Before I purchased my Blackbird I emailed Brandon if the single or the double would be best for really skeeter infested areas. Here is his response.
I did a poll on hammockforums and asked over a hundred of my customers this question and nobody had been bitten through any of our models

Spent 10 nights this past week with not one bite thru my Claytor. I think like the rest of the hammocks made, the density of the fabric pretty much keeps them at bay. Not to mention, you are more than likely sleeping on a sleeping bag or something.
