That's probably the way I'll end up doing it when I do. I really like the idea of Kawishiwi to Sawbill but paying the $70/$80 shuttle fee solo would be painful especially since I still have to rent a solo.

Love it! Thanks for sharing. I felt like I was watching Echo :) I like the new canoe also.
The Lady Chain is on my trip list. I've done Kawishiwi to Malberg and back and I've done some of the Sawbill area, but would like to see the lady chain from Polly to Alton. Did you do a shuttle with Sawbill?

WOW, and 18 footer, that is a behemoth of a canoe. I would not want to portage that, but then a gain I solo so that would be like paddling a B-52 for me. I would love to see more pics of you canoe. My 15 foot Chestnut Prospector (Ranger) is loaded as I type this - Jake and I are headed out for a 10 day solo tomorrow morning, entry #29. That boat is a perfect solo and really becomes a great boat with a load. I bet yours is fast and nimble and excellent with a load as well. My canoe is about 65 pounds, and with a 30 - 35 pound pack I can portage fairly well with her using a tump. I still have to double port as I have to come back for my wannigan.
Goldenbadger, your canoe is beautiful as well ... and so are your dogs. The picture you posted is awesome!
Cheers,
Bob.

milo is a great dog but he sucks at paddling. this is my recently restored 18' chestnut prospector, we are guessing that it is from the 60s. this is an absolutely gigantic canoe yet it can easily keep up with MN2s.

Thank you. The canoe is a 1942 Shell Lake. I finished restoring it last summer. The dogs are my kids. They love canoeing.

my dog is finally growing out of puppy stage. (he's four now). sitting for hours in a canoe was not his idea of a good time. he's a lab and designed to swim, a mile or two of swimming and he chill for a couple days, he's figuring it out, swimming is hard work, duffing in a canoe is life a it's finest.

Thanks for posting this picture and providing a good chuckle for me. I have a 15 lb havanese. He loves canoeing but hates the cold...and the rain. I've pretty much decided he'll stay with a friend on long overnight trips. Do you take your little dog with you canoe camping?

These are of my buddy Amelia.....Stella hated canoeing, but Amelia has taken to it and has been on 4 trips in the 18 months I've had her. A few alarming lunges after "sky raisins" at first, but now she's pretty chill. She has her own sleeping bag now, after spending her first nights wrapped up in my fleece!

Luna just completed her 4th trip with me in Quetico. She's 8 now but you would never know it by her enthusiasm to do the portages and swim and play fetch with a ball around camp.

Canoe Lake, July 2017.
I've only been to the BWCA solo with Boomer once but on the group trips he is normally the only one ready to go fishing with me at dawn. His near 100# weight really helps me handle a tandem canoe solo, especially big ones like this Wenonah Odyssey. I don't know why his bed wasn't in the boat on this morning.

I never get tired of seeing all of these great looking canoe dogs!
Here’s Karma and Jake’s first (and only) Quetico trip 5 years ago. Sadly we lost both of them to cancer over the past 4 years, was really happy to have that experience with them. Try not to laugh at the “pontoons” on the canoe....we are experienced paddlers, but the thought of taking 150 pounds worth of dogs who had never stepped foot in a canoe (and a Berner who hated swimming) made us a little nervous :-) The “pontoons” saved us a few times in big rollers on Bayley Bay, and when the bigger dog decided to shift all of his weight to one side - well worth the slight embarrassment of using them!!
Hoping to do a canoe trip soon with the 2 new members of our pack (Bella and Adrian), just trying to figure out how to make that work since the older one is 105 pounds, and is not very graceful.

Mocha's last trip. She was a beautiful Chocolate Lab rescue dog, when we took her to the U of M she was diagnosed with a leaky heart valve and not given long to live. We put her on meds and got 1.5 more years out of her. She died at 6.5 Year old.
My wife and I did a week long trip into Insula Lake during the Pagami fire. It was her/Mocha's last BW trip. She loved fetching and the water. I still get teary eyed thinking of her.

I really like this forum, Thanks to Tom T for alerting me to it, I am having a lot of fun during the snow storm to day, looking over the great dog/canoe photos, awesome stuff!

We had a difficult morning, slow going and he is not happy with me - giving me the stink eye.

Tom,
Yup, Jake (in the picture) is a year and a half old Vizsla. He is doing pretty well for a pup, we have one more BWCA trip planned and then we are looking to get into WCPP or other wilderness areas.
My canoe is 15 Chestnut Prospector Ranger. It is a great tripping boat for Jake and I.

milo is obsessed with swimming and never understood why you would sit in a boat all day when there is all this wonderful water to swim in. proud to say he stayed in the canoe for our entire five day trip. could be that getting in and out of this 15" deep canoe was just too much work.

This is Luna on Sunday Lake in Quetico. I was out fishing and didn't have my small pack in front of her in the bow. It's the first time I ever saw her sit/lay like this. It could be because the bottom of the canoe was cold to her, not sure. Or it was just a comfortable way to still see what was going on.
Here's a short video of us playing on Marj Lake in Quetico Sept. 2016. She's one of those dogs that WANTS to play ball but doesn't like givin' it up! :) Luna playing fetch
