On my 2015 solo, I met some people on Flying that said that ugly middle spot was flooded by beavers....a real mess. Looks like the dam has cut loose. I wanted to see Bingshick but instead opted for the 87r from Flying to Fay, which by the way, does not end up at the lake but hits the little river/creek...Chub?....on the east end of lake. I was slightly confused til I paddled out and found Fay.
Is that the north or south portage below Bingshick....I assume the southern one?

Yep, that portage looks familiar. Wet in all the same places on that steep climb as when we did it this summer.

Thanks to both of you for the added details about the portage into Fay. When we got to Flying there was a group searching for the Flying to Fay portage unsuccessfully. We didn't have time to stop and help them as we were trying to get to Brant asap to grab our son's favorite site. But your description explains why they were having so much trouble. They did give up after we saw them.

I don't recall having trouble finding the start of the portage on the Flying side......it may have been further west then indicated, but seemed obvious when I saw it. It seems like more people have trouble finding it on the Fay side....up in the creek aways. I even explained it to a seasoned tripping friend who missed it and did the portage to the Bingshick portage intersection. He said that section ( from the creek to the intersection) was not fun....waist deep flooded sections. I thought the landing on the creek side was pretty obvious.

Yes, this video is of the southern portage (below Bingshick) on the extreme northern end of Flying Lake.

There is also an unmarked portage into Fay. After doing this^ portage, if you continue on west past the portage into Bingshick, the small creek will lead to an overgrown trail that will come out at Fay Lake. I'm guessing that's the creek you're referring to.

As you can probably see in the video, the lower section of the trail does appear to have been washed out recently. My guess is that the large beaver dam up near the start of the portage (Flying end) had given away. I know from first hand experience that there were some awfully 'soft' (knee deep) spots just off the trail.
