I take it that this comes from a lake called Height of Land and goes to a lake calle North Lake?
Is this correct? If not, what lakes is it between?

This is where the tenderfoots were ordained into their brotherhood of the Voyageurs by having a dampened cedar bough sprinkled over their head. Besides the monuments, there's a great sandy beach on the North lake side.

It is a portage trail that runs between North & South lake along the international border.

It is noteworthy for a couple of reasons: Water east of this portage runs east into Lake Superior. While water west of here runs west towards Lake of the Woods (and eventually to Hudsons bay). Hence the name "Height of land"

Also, noting the significance of this portage, the Voyageurs christened "newbies" to their brotherhood once they crossed this portage by sprinkling them with a wet cedar bough.

and to confuse people even more... there really is no "height" in the land, it's pretty flat as a pancake.

TB i think there was also some liquor involved in that christening of the newbies.
