Thanks TB for showing me where this was. It was a mammoth Cedar tree. It would take 2 people to join hands around this big guy. I'm a tree hugger now.

Wow. One this size blew down in the 1999 storm and was cut off with a chainsaw while it was allowed. I counted an average section of the rings and multiplied to estimate the age at 400 years.
Seeing that one is now on my bucket list.

Easily one of the most awe inspiring things I've run across in canoe country.

Trees and the woods they create are an essential element for BWCA enjoyment for me.
I know fire is a natural phenomena and is a positive ecological force in the boreal forests, but my time as a firefighter when I was in college allowed enough exposure to burned areas that I can say I don't choose to see them if I can avoid it.
