I was in chat once and someone told me there is an old Indian story about a cave in Quetico park. Supposedly there is a popular waterfall that is visited often. One year an Indian tribe was threatened by some neighboring tribe and a war broke out. In an effort to escape a group of the women and children ran to this waterfall and hid in the cave that was behind the waterfall. supposedly this cave is still around and when there is a big drought one can find it.

I'm taking the family to Alice lake to find the caves this summer. I have a report of 2 on that lake. If I find them I'll post it here.

Just got back from our trip. Alas, since we introduced the father-in-law to the BWCA, our trip was scaled way back. We ended up car camping at Two Island campground and only did day trips from there. We never made it to the old mine or Jack lake.

take pics when you do :) I edited my post above and added a link to my pics of the cave (I do not put pics on bwca because of google)

*on a side not the Minnesota caving society does not approve of information to where caves are located. They have contacted me in the past demanding I not post such information. Being this is a simi private forum I think they will leave this post alone.

ok found some info on my old computer in a file I saved years ago. 2 more caves:

"If you like caves – there is one on Norway Lake, just outside of the BW, a person can park and walk to it. The Norway lake I’m referring too is the small lake north of the tomahawk trail, off of August Lake Road. It’s just north of August lake. Drive to the end of the road, it dead ends at the Norway lake portage. You can hike the portage, and at the lake go right, you’ll walk down a trail that follows the shoreline to a forest service campsite, from the campsite go right and clinb the rocks to the top of the ridge, just about at the end of the lake, on the back side of one of the cliffs, there is a cave, it’s somewhat hard to see because some animal ,bear I’m guessing has drug a bunch of branches an such in fron of the opening. There’s a ton of poop in the cave, so I really didn’t climb in. Another which is actually an old mine shaft goeas about 80 or so feet into the hillside is located in the woods off the portage between Kelly and Jack lake in the BW – this one is pretty neat"

And the last one on my list...

"There is a rather large crack in the ground just off the portage from Bald Eagle lake into Turtle I think, that felt a little strange. A few of us jumped down into it and looked up at the others. The cave went back there a ways."

There is a cave just on the outside of the BW but I can't find the info to it right now. When I do find it I'll post it here. It's nice to have it all in one loaction.

*disclaimer* -of course anyone that visits these caves, please treat them with respect and do not take any formations as they are protected by the federal government.

Jordan Lake cave

cave pic

I emailed SS and asked the location of the cave. Here is what they said: "It's been quite a few years, but if my memory serves me right, the cave in question is near the southern most campsite on Jordan. We set up camp there and went exploring on foot around the banks near the landing pad for this campsite. The cave was S.E. from the campsite landing pad. There were some rock structures near the shore and a small hole at the base of the rocks that we crawled through to get the the cave, which was a small area, but quite a nice find"

Not really a cave per say. But, there are some deep fissures in the rock cliffs on Rose lake near Stairway portage.

This type of information is exactly why I created this forum. Thank you for posting!

We're planning on visiting the old mine near Jack lake this summer.

That's neat!

Just a note to people- never be on a high up cave in a lighting storm. The lighting will pass though the walls and into the room unless you are deep under ground (which is hard to do in the BW with the water table being so high)

A few years ago I found a small cave along the southeast shore of Thomas Lake. I didn't have a marker to mark it on my map, but it was very small -- we stuck our heads in with a flashlight and there'd be room to shimmy in and an opening that might fit 2 or 3 people in at the end. Kinda cool.
