I have only seen this from the lake. I wish I would have climbed up there. What a view.

Thanks TB!

We ended up on Rose, directly across from the Stairway Portage, on our 3rd night so that was a perfect base to go for it. The 2 miles each way wasn't too bad. A few brushy spots that were at, or just above, my boys' heads but with their uncle leading the way and me behind everything was fine on the trail. What a view! I'm so glad we made that hike happen.

TB, I can't believe how large that tree to the right of your daughter in 2020 appears to be now in 2023. That is significant growth in a few short years!

TB - I remember gathering up the bits of information I could find about this overlook and discussing it here not that long ago. I thought I had put things together as well as I could, but your trip report brings it to life in a new way. Thanks for compiling the information and mapping things out so clearly. Very detailed and very helpful. This is an area I want to hike very soon.

Rose lake overlook

Video & photos taken October 2013.

LOCATION: This particular overlook is west of Stairway Portage along the B-R-T. IMHO this is the most impressive, but, there are several great overlooks of Rose lake along the B-R-T.

TB, when you took your daughter in 2020, did you approach the overlook from the west or east? Do you have any thoughts on which way is better? I'm heading that direction with my boys (nearly 8 and 11) and we are paddling from Gunflint to Hungry Jack. I'm trying to figure out if I would be better off hiking here when we are camped on South or Rose.

Not being familiar with the BRT, the logistics of finding it from Rose looks easier since we wouldn't need to watch for any spur trails like we would on our way back to South, but my GPS should minimize that anyway.

One other question - aside from the risk of falling off the overlook, which I assume can be minimized by keeping back a bit, are there any other risks for falling along the trail?

We came at the overlook from a spur trail on Patridge Lake out of the northern most campsite. The actual trail to the overlook was easier than coming from Stairway portage but, it's a fairly tough portage into Patridge from Duncan. Don't have any 1st hand experience hiking to the overlook from South Lake.

There weren't any treacherous sections hiking to it from Partridge.
