The most important thing may be the environment inside. I can walk into South Gate alone and employees and customers alike seem inclined to strike up a conversation. In other words, it's a friendly place. SG does become a crowded and noisy place on Friday nights and Saturdays. However, I am retired and can pick my time. It's not just my biased opinion. Out of all the hundreds of brewpubs in California, SG made number 8 on a list of the top 10. I'm guessing that beer, food and atmosphere were all considered. I've recently discovered a different sort of place down in Fresno. It's a taproom that goes by Goldstein's Mortuary and Delicatessen. Food is supplied by a truck out back and I am unfamiliar with its quality. It is one of the friendlier taprooms or breweries in Fresno. The main thing about it though is the beer. They have about 46 beers on tap. I don't know exactly how often they rotate but I went twice, two weeks apart and didn't recognize any of the offerings the second time around. Those offerings are often from little breweries that don't bottle and not something with which the average beer drinker would be familiar. Goldstein's is the place to explore brews from all around California and nearby states. Oh....almost forgot, the decor at Goldstein's is kind of special too. |
