We had a bunch of those bugs in our camp a few years ago up on the Brightsands River in Ontario and they are noisy, if 3-4 grabbed you they look big enough to carry you off. Don't think they bite though. FRED

That's a great name for them. I knew what you were talking about right away. I have heard them quite often, but never knew what their real name was until inspecter13 said it.

Funny. We call it the "ratchety bug" because of its sound. Have never traced the sound to any critter though. Thanks.

I’m pretty sure you are describing the sound a Pine Sawyer Beetle larva makes.
