We had a bunch of those bugs in our camp a few years ago up on the Brightsands River in Ontario and they are noisy, if 3-4 grabbed you they look big enough to carry you off. Don't think they bite though. FRED

That's a great name for them. I knew what you were talking about right away. I have heard them quite often, but never knew what their real name was until inspecter13 said it.

Most years I hear what I call "Shoe Squeak Bugs" in the evening around camp. I assume they are some kind of beetle. Anyone know what they are? Not really a biter, as far as I know. Thanks.

Funny. We call it the "ratchety bug" because of its sound. Have never traced the sound to any critter though. Thanks.

I’m pretty sure you are describing the sound a Pine Sawyer Beetle larva makes.
