Trip Introduction:
This was a great trip! The first day started out cold, windy, and snowy. After that each day got progressively better. We saw a lot of beautiful scenery and spent great time with friends.

Day 1 of 5

Thursday, October 06, 2005

On Wednesday afternoon I picked a couple friends up at the MSP airport and then we met the other members of our group and got started packing. As we were getting our gear together we kept hearing news reports of 15 inches of snow in North Dakota. This had us a little worried that some of it might also dump on us, but snow or not we were still going. We hit the road at about 2am headed for Ely, arriving at about 7am. We quickly unloaded all our gear and canoes, waded down the shallow Picket Creek and launched the canoes into Mudro Lake. The air was cold, it was raining lightly, and as of yet there was little wind. We moved over the portages into Fourtown pretty quickly. As we got started on Fourtown the wind started picking up and continued strongly for the rest of the day. We worked our way up through Boot Lake and over the portage into Fairy where we camped on the east campsite. We were all cold, tired, wet, and ready for a hot meal. We were finally able to get a fire started with the wet wood. We put steaks on the fire, boiled some water for hot chocolate, heated up some mashed potatoes, and beans. It was a good meal for the end of a cold day. We all were ready to get some sleep.

Day 2 of 5

Friday, October 07, 2005

After a cold nights sleep we were all ready for a big breakfast. We made pancakes, bacon, & eggs. After the hard paddling the day before, the prospect of more wind, and the low water levels we decided not to complete the entire loop that we had been planning on. We packed up camp and headed back into Fourtown. We had an easy day of it and camped on the south site in the eastern bay of Fourtown where there is a small water fall in front of the site. We enjoyed a little more relaxing and did some hiking and exploring of the area. Dinner was hotdogs, and beans.

Day 3 of 5

Saturday, October 08, 2005

We woke up to a beautiful clear day. Breakfast of Pancakes, Bacon, and oatmeal. Packed up camp and worked our way over to Horse Lake. We spent quite a while exploring the lake. We looked at a few campsites and decided to stay at the site on the north east end of the lake. This was our favorite site of the trip. We set up camp and then hiked down to the bluffs south of the site. The weather was perfect and we very much enjoyed relaxing and exploring the area. Dinner was a cheese and hotdog pasta. We stayed up into the evening watching the stars and talking.

Day 4 of 5

Sunday, October 09, 2005

Woke up to another beautiful morning. We enjoyed a great breakfast of Burritos and pancakes. After packing up camp we canoed down to the horse river where we worked our way over a couple portages before deciding to just leave the canoes and hike for a while. It was pretty easy to work our way along the edge of the river. We hiked up about a mile and then back again. It was very quiet and we enjoyed the change of pace. When we got back to the canoes we headed down to the south site on Horse where we stopped for lunch and explored for a while. We finally got back in the canoes and portaged down to Sandpit and then over to Mudro where we set up camp for the last night. For dinner we finished up the last bits of food that we had with us. We enjoyed the last evening around the campfire.

Day 5 of 5

Monday, October 10, 2005

Everyone was up early on Monday morning. We quickly packed up camp and headed off across the very foggy lake. Back at the Chainsaw Sisters we loaded up the vehicles and drove into Ely for Breakfast. Enjoyed a great meal at the Journey's End Cafe. Then we hit the road for home.

This was a great trip! It was very relaxing and we saw a lot of beautiful scenery. A perfect introduction to the BWCA for our 3 new people.
