Insanely expensive but we found them on sale, plus used our REI rebate. Excellent waterproof and breathability characteristics. Hiked 15 miles in them in all-day rain and high humidity in spring in the Great Smokies and had no issues with either water penetration or condensation. They go in my pack on any trip when there's any rain threat. I've also put them on around camp on cold, windy days to provide a wind-resistant layer over my pants.
The way the leg is cut maximizes one's freedom of movement. There's some sort of articulation in the knee, apparently an Arc'teryx trademark. Excellent to portage in. They're comfortable when sitting in a canoe too. They have a narrower leg than many rain pants which adds to the freedom of movement. I put them on and forget I have them on, which is as high a compliment as I can think of for a rain paint.
Fitting - They are slender at the waist. Also a fairly narrow leg as rain pants go but they go over another pant just fine. And they come in a Long size! For this 6'3" guy that alone makes them worth the price - I'm so tired of outdoor clothing that ends at my ankles.
My only squawk is that they're a bit tricky to put on over my size 12 hiking boot when backpacking or over my Chotas when in the BWCA. I can manage it but gotta be careful, because of the slender leg. My wife doesn't have any problem with hers - smaller foot. There's a long zipper at the bottom of the leg so the boot entry isn't a problem. The difficulty is worth the tradeoff though because as I said the narrow leg is a real asset when you have them on.
Rain pants are one of those things that are a must for an extended trip but may well not get used so I don't want them to take up a lot of space. These are lighter and stuff down smaller than any rain pant I've had. When we're canoeing and there's any threat of rain they ride in our day pack with the rain coat. When I'm backpacking they go in my kangaroo pocket so they're always accessible. Love that they're small enough that I can do that and not feel like I've overwhelmed my prime space.
The quality is absolutely topnotch. Superb seams and zippers, awesome material. I don't plan on ever needing a different rain pant.
Because of the price they're not for the occasional outdoors person. But if you do this stuff all the time and you put yourself in situations where you really need to stay warm and dry (and you just won the lottery) then I'd certainly recommend these.
