#4 Monarch by Duluth Pack

#4 Monarch

Product Description

We begin with our sturdy 18-ounce canvas, add quality roller buckles and then premium leather straps, sewn and reinforced with rivets. To our tough leather shoulder straps we added foam padding and covered the foam with soft glove leather. A clip-on sternum strap keeps shoulder straps from shifting, and an adjustable (and removable) hip belt further stabilizes the load and helps distribute the weight. The large side-release buckle closure on the waist belt makes getting in and out of the pack a breeze . In addition, we also added side straps for load compression and stabilization, side pockets, three slash pockets on the inside front and a deep inside pack pocket to hold a tarp or sleeping pad to cushion your back. Comes with a replaceable heavy-duty poly liner. Also available in Waxed Canvas. Made in USA.

Very nice pack - but so expensive!

I have mine in waxed, and got it at the beginning of the time when prices started to skyrocket, paying ~$225 during a store-wide sale (and it came with the map pocket then!).

Since then I've taken this pack on 20+ BWCA trips, and it has held up. There were a couple of stitching issues with the side pockets, but these were repaired under warranty. We generally use this pack as a personal gear pack and it holds A LOT! The sides are usually reserved for Nalgenes and fishing tackle, etc. The padded back straps and waist belt make it much more manageable on longer portages.

Also, it just looks "right" up in the BWCA.

That said, I would not pay $350 for one today, or close to $400 for a waxed version. If I had a significant disposable income, I would, but if one is looking for utility at a reasonable cost, consider looking elsewhere.
