Portage Notes: Coming in from burntside lake it took us a while to find the portage. Our map was out of date, however, that portage is SLIGHTLY northwest of moccasin island. Google maps has it correctly marked, as does this site as of today. That day we traveled it was a steady, constant rain and the beaver pond half way through the portage was very torn up. That said the length was tough for a heavy, wide-width plastic canoe but in drier conditions this would have only been a long portage, not a long, miserable portage ;) Took us two trips. First part and last parts are pretty well maintained, beaver pond in the middle was a little stressful, hence the 3.

Portage Notes: Don't be intimidated by this portage! As far as BWCA portages go this one is not hard, it's just long. A small amount of rock stepping near Burntside. There are long stretches of easy walking. A beaver pond expanded creating a 50 foot segment of muddy water about 2/3 towards Crab. We did this portage in 1 trip, took about 40 minutes total with 3 short breaks.

Portage Notes: Definitely long. Just seems to keep going and going. But aside from the length, it's really not bad. I think the forest service had been through fairly recently clearing any downed trees over the path - fresh cuts and logs off to the side of the trail in several places. Some mud to deal with that I doubt ever really dries up, but only in one section.

Portage Notes: This portage has 3 phases. 1. the first leg (coming from Burntside) has several ups and downs along a very rocky trail. 2. The trail skirts then crosses a swamp before skirting it again. This section will, at the very least, be wet if not muddy. 3. Finally, the trail opens up and continues on a very long gradual climb over an excellent path. (Fortunately there's a nice rest spot at the top of the climb). The portage finishes up at a nice sandy beach on Crab Lake.

Portage Notes: Not a horrible portage, but definitely long with lots of hills and rocks. After making the portage, I prefer it to taking the stream from Burntside into Crab. The stream was nice at first with good views and easy paddling until we came upon a swamp/bog with multiple beaver dams and vicious mosquitos. It took a good hour to get the group through and afterwards we we greeted with multiple submerged logging bridges that we couldn't paddle over/through/around. Definitely a good challenge and rewarding to see Crab lake and open water.

Portage Notes: Slick and muddy in places. Boulders in part of the path. Had to walk through a small creek. I miss the old portage. This went from being a 7 to a 9 when they relocated this portage.

Portage Notes: The new section from Burntside Lake to Crab Lake is with many ups and downs (hilly) and has many rocks so one finds they are picking their steps deliberately. After a bit more than a 1/3 it gets easier with a gradual incline followed by a gradual decline to Crab Lake. The put in/out at Burntside is a bit rocky but the put in/take out at Crab Lake is sandy. The 2007 revised Fisher maps now have it listed at 420 rods.

Portage Notes: travelled from Crab to Burntside- Nice, easy portage on the crab side, downhill, smooth, until you get to the water in the middle, we had to paddle across it. On the other side, it is nthing but up and down rocks rocks rocks that seems to go on forever. I ended up rolling my ankle on this portage. Not the worst portage in the world, but long and rocky.

Portage Notes: Portage starts out pretty level, with some small up and downs, and then gradually rises most of the way to Crab Lake. No hills are steep. There is a marshy area that we were able to walk around about half-way through the portage. May require paddle-over during high water. The trail gets a little narrower as it gets closer to Crab Lake. If not for the length, this would be an average or easy portage. Landing on both sides are pretty good.
