Portage Notes: TuscaroraBorealis is correct. Looking north from the end of the portage from Crystal to Spaulding you will see on opening at about 11 oclock. This is not the portage to Bench. Go further west down Spaulding and you will find it under a big white pine.

Portage Notes: This portage is impassable. The trail is cleary not well used, because the trail is somewhat overgrown. However, there are saplings 1"-3" in diameter that have presumably been wind blown and bent over the trail. And not just a few here an there, but many, such that carrying a canoe through was not possible. Even without canoes and attempting to walk or crawl through the 2' tall "tunnel" was not possible. We resigned to return to Spaulding and Crystal without even dipping a line in Bench Lake.

Portage Notes: The portage has still not been completely cleared from the 99 blowdown. The portage hasn't been oficially moved, so much as the few folks who do wander into Bench, have kind of "found their own way" through. I was here in 99 less than month after the blowdown and the trail was descernable, but it was a disaster area. Pulling under and over trees, and the the drop into Bench! The drop into bench used to kiind of goat trail back and forth...now there are portions where the trail isn't noticable, really there isn't a trail for portions of it. I just walked down the hill, the good part is where the trail complertely disappears, the woods are open enough to just walk through. Coming back can be tricky, as it's difficult to find where the trail enters back into the woods at the top of the hill out of bench. The spaulding lake end is in the same spot as 99 so that hasn't changed, just kind of meanders about through the woods in different directions and in 2011 - i still had trees to pull over.

Portage Notes: WARNING: There is a false trail! Apparently the trail has been moved. The landing & start of the old trail are still evident but, the trail soon peters out into thick brush & you'll end up backtracking. The actual portage is on the extreme northwestern end of Spaulding lake under a large pine tree. (see photo) The trail is quite overgrown but, still easily followed. The climb out of Bench is substantial & there is a tricky spot where the new trail intersects with the old one where you'll have be careful to make sure you turn off on the new trail.
