Insula Base Camp (My Wife's First Trip) (17 photos)
Sunrise Over Tent 2
There's just something so inviting about the sun coming up over a tent...
The Last Photo
We set the camera on a rock for a final photo before we paddled the last leg of our exit route. We made it, and my wife enjoyed it. She'll be back (there was never any doubt that I'd return).
Reflections
Aside from our first day, we had some of the best paddling weather you could have--slight winds or calm, even in the middle of the day.
The Little Things
Sometimes it was just the little things that made it all worthwhile.
Setting in on the way home
Sparks
I was excited to use the firesteel I received for Christmas (Thanks, honey!).
She like it!
My wife had a wonderful time. She's already pressing me to schedule another trip for June or July...
Switching hands
My wife was always worried about tipping us when she turned around to shoot photos.
Misty Morning
Highs were often forty degrees higher than the lows, and the mornings were shrouded in mist.
Pictograph closeup
This was one of the first ones we spotted. It was only a little larger than a hand print.
Fajitas
We planned to have them for our first night's supper, but we were both too tired to cook and clean. They made a great lunch in camp on day two.
Home Sweet Home
Early morning on Saturday.
Penny alcohol stove
Our primary means of cooking was a homemade penny alcohol stove. We burned Heet.
Fishdance pictographs
Just one of the pictographs from Fishdance. Could it have been lashed poles hanging skins or fish?
The Insula Portage
We stopped for a photo at the approximate location where I broke my right leg in 2006.
As we set in
Someone else at the entry point was kind enough to snap this one for us. It was a cold, wet morning, but we were excited about our first time away together in many years.
Dawn Over Tent
Just a nice shot of the rising sun from our campsite on Insula.
